John held Archie tonight. It was the first time he was able to cuddle our little man in three weeks.
Father and son stared at each other, memorizing the contours of the other’s face. I moved around the
pair, snapping photos to save the moment for us forever. Baby would have smiled at man if he knew how,
I know it.
On Saturday morning we learned that Dr. Horne visited Archie late last night, long after we’d already
abandoned our bedside vigil. The note he left in the baby’s thick medical chart reads: “Will consider
transport to MUSC on Monday if patient is not off ventilator by then.”
Although Archie’s ventilator has been turned down in response to two days’ worth of significantly improved
blood gases, he still needs the machine’s assistance. Without it, the little man pants like an amateur
marathoner heading into mile number fifteen.
Right now our son is resting, his legs propped up on a rolled blanket, like a babe at the beach. Early
tomorrow morning Archie will be five weeks old. He is completely oblivious to what lies directly ahead of
him. I wish I shared in his ignorance, too.
